Steve Schofield

POOLE PIRATE 1985 – 1997

Former Weymouth rider who joined the club in 1986, and scored a faultless maximum on his debut in the Poole colours. His high scoring helped the side to finish runners- up in the race for the National League title, with Steve ending the season as the Wildcats number one with a 10.45 average.

He continued to dominate the Poole scorechart for the next two seasons, averaging around the ten point mark, and topping the National League averages. Individually, he showed his liking for the Poole track by scoring 14 points to win the 1988 Blue Riband individual title.

However, his on-track success saw him loaned out to Hackney for the next two seasons, his average proving too high for him to fit into the new look Poole side. This did not stop him from successfully defending his Blue Riband title in 1989.

Recalled to Poole at the beginning of 1991, his consistent scoring one again made him a star performer for the side, finishing the season with a 7.93 average. He played a key role in the 1994 championship winning side, providing excellent back up to the team’s spearhead of Boyce, Crump, and Gunnestad. His tenacious riding was rewarded with the first of his international caps for the England national team.

He continued to pile up the points to become the club’s all-time high scorer, but a loss of form during the 1997 season saw him struggle to stay among the points in the cut and thrust of Elite League racing. His loss of form saw the promotion take the difficult decision to drop him from the side, which ended his ten year career with the club.

One of the most loyal riders to have donned the skull and crossbones race jacket, he topped the Poole averages on three occasions and twice represented the Pirates in the National League Riders Championship final.

Made 320 League and Knockout Cup appearances for the club and scored 3349.5 points.
Currently ranked the Club’s 4th highest individual points scorer.
Was inducted into the Poole Hall of Fame in 2008.
